Mapping standards & control descriptions
Many people don't realize that orienteering has two mapping standards, one for Sprint races and another for Middle and Long races. You can download a handy reference sheet for both the Sprint standard (ISSOM) and the "normal" standard (ISOM) from the Barebones website - see the "Mapping and Understanding Maps" section.
Start Procedure
Everyone will have assigned start times for each race. Please be at the start area at least 5 minutes before your start time.
A "typical" three-line call up will be used:
Pre-call up - clear & check your SI stick
You will be called up three minutes before your assigned start time, and go into a three-line start procedure:
Line 1 - you must show that you have the correct SI stick, and must punch a "Clear" station
Line 2 - you get a separate control description sheet
Line 3 - you wait beside your map for the beep
Start - at your start time, you pick up your map, punch the "Start" station, and then follow the flagging a short distance (approx 5m-50m) to the start triangle

Shadowing
Shadowing is strongly recommended for children under 10, recommended for children 11 and 12, and acceptable for any age. As this event is a championship, anyone shadowing must run their own course before shadowing someone on another course.
Shadowing policies
At our Wednesday night meets we often ‘shadow’ our young orienteers. At most races shadowing is not a common practice however in some of our local races we allow shadowing because our juniors do not get a lot of opportunity to run on forest maps. Please follow these guidelines if shadowing a junior in a competition:

At our Wednesday night meets we often ‘shadow’ our young orienteers. At most races shadowing is not a common practice however in some of our local races we allow shadowing because our juniors do not get a lot of opportunity to run on forest maps. Please follow these guidelines if shadowing a junior in a competition:
- The role of the shadow is to provide comfort to the runner, without helping them (in case they get lost or encounter wildlife). We want our juniors to feel safe in the forest and develop the confidence to eventually run on their own.
- The shadow should run a short ways behind and the runner navigates independently.
- If the runner does get lost or needs help navigating, when you return to the finish please say that you helped your runner and that you should be moved to the recreational category. This is because it would be unfair for a runner who received help from their shadow to rank higher in the results than a runner that completed the course alone.
