Middle Distance race
Last Minute Important Info
1. If you have not signed a waiver for Camp Horizon in advance, you MUST do that at Venture Lodge before you start your course.
2. When you finish your course, you MUST follow flagged route (250m) to Venture Lodge, to download. This is how we know you have returned safely.
3. Everyone MUST have a whistle – this will be checked at the start.
4. MAXIMUM TIME on your course is 2 hours. You will be disqualified if you exceed 2 hours.
5. You need to know the symbol for “ROUGH OPEN WITH SCATTERED TREES”, which is the same yellow as “rough open” but with white dots. The runability in
these areas is variable; as the density of the planted pine trees (1-4m high) varies considerably.
6. ANIMALS: Animals in the area include cattle (give them a wide berth), deer, moose and possibly bears, coyotes, wolves and cougars. Organizers have seen cattle, deer and moose during mapping and course setting.
7. WATER ON COURSE: Due to the hot weather, we decided at the last minute to put water on Courses 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. It is not on the control descriptions.
8. HUNTING SEASON: It is hunting season, but Camp Horizon staff say hunters very rarely come to this area. Wear a bright-colored shirt if possible!

Camp Horizon waiver: everyone entering Camp Horizon property MUST sign a Camp Horizon waiver. You can do this at the Sprint event on Saturday morning. Last minute signatures must be done at Venture Lodge at Camp Horizon before starting.
Maximum time to be on your course: 2 hours (if you exceed 2 hours, you will be disqualified)
Safety bearing: North to Highway 66
Terrain description: The topography is fairly hilly with a generally north-facing aspect. There are pockets of contour detail as well as areas of relatively featureless hillside. The basemap was made in 2010 and the fieldwork was done in the fall of 2012. There was significant logging done between those dates. There are a couple of large marshes and a number of small marshes. These are all wetter than normal for this time of year. Some small streams have slightly different watercourses (due to the extreme flooding in June) which we have not had time to correct. Regarding vegetation: the high rainfall over the summer, combined with the north-facing aspect, has resulted in thick and tall growth of grasses, raspberry bushes, and other shrubs, which obscure the ground surface and in some places are higher than ”super junior” children! There are areas of planted pine trees (1-4m high), some of which you can run through, and some of which is rather dense. In general, the ground surface is uneven, often with varying amounts of deadfall so watch your footing! If it is raining, please be careful not to slip on wet logs.
Course setter’s notes (CHECK BACK DURING THE WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT, FOR UPDATED INFORMATION):
Start: The start is under a power line, so beware of inaccurate compass bearings here!
Shadowing: is strongly recommended for children under 10, recommended for children 11 and 12, and acceptable for any age. As this event is a championship, anyone shadowing must run their own course before shadowing someone on another course.
Trails: some are overgrown in places due to the wet summer. There is one leg (for super juniors, M/W12 and M/W75) that is flagged, because the trail on the map is not really visible on the ground.
Vegetation: the grasses and shrubs in the rough open areas are much thicker and higher than normal. Take care to watch your footing, especially as there are many areas with deadfall and/or logging debris, which will be slippery if wet. Logged areas are drawn with the “slow running” green vertical lines superimposed over the “rough open with scattered trees” area symbol. The ground surface is generally rough/uneven.
Finish: to download after you finish, follow signs for 250m to Venture Lodge.
